The YSR Congress, which had previously supported the BJP-led NDA Government in passing the Citizenship Amendment Act, has now changed its stance. The party announced that it does not accept the CAA in its current form and is calling for amendments to address the concerns of the Muslim population.
This shift in position was not unexpected, given the BJP’s alliances with other parties like the TDP and Jana Sena. YSR Congress MLA Hafiz Khan expressed the party’s firm stance against the current format of the CAA during a press conference. He highlighted the negative impact on the Muslim community and echoed public apprehensions.
MLA Hafiz Khan emphasized the need for immediate reforms to the CAA and urged for amendments to address the legitimate concerns of the Muslim community. He also referenced former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy’s initiatives, such as granting four percent reservation to Muslims, to illustrate the party’s commitment to all communities.
This decision by the YSR Congress may cause tension with the BJP, which relied on the party’s Rajya Sabha members to pass the Act smoothly. With clear political divisions emerging, the YSRCP is now focusing on appealing to its minority constituency, which has been a strong supporter of the party.
