    Hyderabad: In a major effort to reduce drunk driving, the Cyberabad traffic police caught 284 people for driving under the influence of alcohol during late-night checks on Saturday. These checks were carried out at several locations under the Cyberabad Commissionerate.

    As part of this weekend drive, the police formed special teams to monitor roads and catch drunk drivers. Among those caught, 284 were two-wheeler riders, 248 were driving three-wheelers, and 27 were in four-wheelers. In 33 cases, drivers had very high blood alcohol levels, between 200 mg/100 ml and 550 mg/100 ml. All of them will have to appear in court. The Miyapur area alone reported 53 cases.

    During the operation, the police also found some individuals involved in underage drinking and drunk driving. While the traffic police booked them for driving under the influence, the local police will investigate where they got the alcohol from.

    The Cyberabad police issued a warning saying that anyone caught drunk driving and causing a fatal accident will be arrested and charged under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. This law deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and carries a maximum jail sentence of 10 years, along with a fine.

    In a similar drive, the Hyderabad traffic police booked 1,029 people for drunk driving over the past week. Out of these, 886 were riding two-wheelers, 37 were in three-wheelers, 102 were in cars, and four were driving heavy vehicles. Among them, 57 had very high blood alcohol levels, and 29 were under the age of 21. Most of the offenders were between the ages of 21 and 33, while 419 were aged 31-40, and 180 were between 41-50 years old.
