Hyderabad police have intensified their crackdown on drunk driving, catching a large number of offenders over the past week. During late-night checks across various locations under the Hyderabad and Cyberabad Police Commissionerates, a total of 1,423 people were found driving under the influence.
Between April 26 and May 2, the Hyderabad Traffic Police alone recorded 1,185 cases of drunk driving. Most of these—1,010 cases—involved people riding two-wheelers. Another 122 involved cars, 51 were three-wheeler drivers, and two were driving heavy vehicles.
The police found that 68 drivers had dangerously high blood alcohol levels, with BAC readings of 200 mg/100 ml or more. Among those caught were two women and one minor. The offenders also included 20 young drivers aged 18 to 20.
The majority of violators were aged between 21 and 30, totaling 484, followed by 409 offenders in the 31–40 age group and 190 between 41 and 50 years old.
Meanwhile, in Cyberabad, weekend checks caught 238 drivers under the influence. Of these, 187 were on two-wheelers, four on three-wheelers, 45 in four-wheelers, and two driving heavy vehicles. The police reported 18 individuals with extremely high BAC levels—some as high as 550 mg/100 ml.
All offenders will have to appear before the court. The Chevella zone reported the most violations with 27 cases, followed by 24 in Miyapur, 20 in Balanagar, 18 in Shamshabad, and 17 in Medchal.
The special drive also revealed cases of underage drinking. While traffic police filed cases for drunk driving, the law and order police will investigate how minors obtained alcohol.
Authorities are urging the public to stay responsible. They warned that anyone who causes a fatal accident while drunk will face serious charges. Under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, such offenders can be jailed for up to 10 years and fined.
