Hyderabad: The government, guided by Governor Jishnu Dev Varma and Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, plans to offer new homes to the Chenchu community, a group that has long lived without proper housing. An additional 9,000 houses will support tribal regions.
On Sunday, Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy announced that 13,266 Indiramma houses will be given to Chenchu families. This initiative covers 21 constituencies through four Integrated Tribal Development Agencies (ITDAs): Utnoor, Bhadrachalam, Munnanur, and Eturu Nagaram.
Both the Governor and Chief Minister have urged for better housing in tribal areas. Acting on these recommendations, the government is providing homes to the Chenchus, a tribe known for living in forests, hunting, and gathering resources. These new homes will be built where the Chenchus currently reside, replacing their temporary huts.
On Monday, Minister Reddy, along with local MLA Dr. Vamsi Krishna, will distribute the housing approval documents to the Chenchus in the Munnanur, Achampet constituency.
The government has long ignored the housing needs of the Chenchus, but now, it is taking action. In Utnoor’s ITDA region alone, 10,836 houses are planned. Other allocations include Mancherial (157), Nirmal (153), Asifabad (3,371), Boath (163), Khanapur (2,257), Sirpur (227), Adilabad (2,848), and Bellampalli (223). In Bhadrachalam’s ITDA, Aswaraopet will receive 274 houses. The Munnanur Chenchu Special Project will provide 2,156 homes across areas like Achampet (785), Mahabubnagar (245), Parigi (63), Tandoor (174), Kollapur (105), Kalwakurthy (120), Vikarabad (63), Devarakadra (64), and Nagarjunasagar (17).
Initially, the plan was to sanction 3,500 Indiramma houses per constituency. However, an additional 8,750 houses have now been approved for tribal areas within the ITDA regions. An ITDA Project Officer will oversee the allocation process as the nodal officer.
