The State Government of Hyderabad is determined to finish the Godavari Phase 2 and 3 projects within 24 months. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy recently laid the foundation stones for these initiatives. These projects aim to bring drinking water to Hyderabad by enhancing infrastructure at the Sripada Yellampalli project. Water from the Godavari River will be pumped to Mallanna Sagar and then piped to the city. The entire project is expected to cost Rs 7,400 crore.
Officials from the Hyderabad Water Board explained that the Yellampalli project already supports water supply under Phase 1. Now, they are improving infrastructure at the water’s starting point for Phase 2 and 3.
The project’s detailed report highlights the need for better infrastructure to lift 20 TMC of water for drinking purposes and to replenish water bodies in Hyderabad, ensuring the Musi River remains vibrant. During the rainy season, the current setup can lift enough water to fill the Mallanna Sagar reservoir. However, in dry periods, drawing water from the Godavari via Yellampalli poses challenges. Officials have developed plans to ensure adequate water lifting even during shortages, although specific details of these works under the new phases remain undisclosed.
The Mallanna Sagar reservoir holds 50 TMC of water, essential for both irrigation and drinking needs in the areas around the old Medak district. Officials emphasize the timely completion of the project, as it is crucial for the Musi rejuvenation project.
