Students and volunteers work together to clean Kapra Lake

Hyderabad: Over 200 volunteers gathered on Tuesday to clean up Kapra Lake in Secunderabad as part of a major environmental initiative. The event aimed to raise awareness about sustainability and water conservation among students and the local community.

The cleanup was organized by the Kapra Lake Revival Group (KLRG) in partnership with Bhavans Sri Ramakrishna Vidyalaya (BSRKV), located in Sainikpuri. It was a key activity during the All India Bhavan’s Meet, which focused on environmental education.

The day began with a morning run around the lake, setting an energetic tone for the event. Volunteers then gathered at the colorful steps of the Immersion Pond to talk about the importance of protecting local water bodies.

The highlight of the day was a large-scale lake cleanup. Volunteers, including students, teachers, nature lovers, and local environmentalists, worked together to collect a total of 205 kilograms of trash from the lakeside. Their efforts helped remove harmful waste and restore the natural beauty of the area.

Deepa Shailendra, a KLRG trustee and digital content creator, emphasized how daily choices at home can impact the environment. “When we use strong chemical cleaners, they eventually reach and pollute our lakes and underground water,” she said.

Manognya Reddy, a former Oracle employee who now supports KLRG’s operations with professional methods, shared her personal motivation. “Kapra Lake is part of our community. I remember it full of life, and our goal is to keep it that way,” she said.

As part of their learning experience, students also visited Rashtrapati Nilayam, where they explored traditional water-saving techniques. They learned about step wells, ancient water storage systems, and toured herbal gardens that reflect eco-friendly practices from the past.

The event not only cleaned up the lake but also inspired the next generation to care for their environment, proving that community action can make a real difference.
