The Supreme Court has canceled the nominations of M Kodandaram and Amir Ali Khan as Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) in Telangana. This decision supports earlier interim orders from the Telangana High Court.
Bharat Rashtra Samithi leaders, Sravan Dasoju and K Satyanarayana, filed a petition leading to the Supreme Court’s action. They argued that the appointments violated the High Court’s previous orders.
The Supreme Court stated that it was inappropriate for Kodandaram and Khan to assume their roles after the High Court’s decision. The Court emphasized that any appointments under the Governor’s quota must align with ongoing legal proceedings.
In March 2024, the Telangana High Court nullified the then Governor’s rejection of the BRS nominations and the subsequent appointments of Kodandaram and Khan, calling for a status quo. Initially, in August 2023, the BRS government had recommended Dasoju Sravan and Kurra Satyanarayana, but then-Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan rejected them due to political ties. The Congress government later nominated Kodandaram and Khan, leading to further legal disputes.
The Supreme Court’s decision has paused these nominations. KT Rama Rao, BRS working president, welcomed the stay. He criticized the BJP and Congress, accusing them of misusing the Governor’s system. On social media, KTR pointed out that while the BJP blocked BRS’s initial nominees, the Congress pushed for new names, disregarding democratic processes.
