Hyderabad: The Chief Justice of Telangana High Court, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, emphasized the importance of a balanced approach in tax enforcement during the National Tax Conference. He spoke about protecting individual liberties while ensuring revenue collection integrity. The conference was organized by the All India Federation of Tax Practitioners (AIFTP), South Zone, with support from the Telangana Tax Practitioners Association and the Federation of Telangana Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FTCCI) at FTCCI in Red Hills. Justice Ujjal Bhuyan was the chief guest, and Justice Alok Aradhe, Chief Justice of the High Court of Telangana, was the guest of honor.
In his keynote address, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan shared his experiences as a Judge in the Mumbai High Court and discussed landmark judgments on arrest provisions of GST. He highlighted the importance of officers recording reasons before making an arrest to protect individual rights. Justice Alok Aradhe emphasized the role of taxes in society, quoting Chanakya to illustrate the importance of collecting taxes without causing harm to citizens. The conference aimed to exchange ideas and promote reasonable and respectful tax practices for the public good.
The conference, held in Hyderabad after an 8-year gap, focused on topics like Understanding Sec.43B(h), Analysis of Input Tax Credit, and Recent Landmark decisions under GST. Justice Ujjal Bhuyan’s judgments in the Mumbai High Court have influenced similar decisions across the country. He stressed the need for officers to exercise their powers judiciously to prevent businesses from being adversely affected by stringent tax laws. Overall, the conference aimed to enhance knowledge and promote better tax practices for the benefit of society.
