The Telangana government has announced the final reservation pattern for Mayors of Municipal Corporations and Chairpersons of Municipalities across the state, with a landmark decision to reserve 50 per cent of the posts for women. The announcement was made on Saturday by Municipal Administration Department Director Sridevi during a media conference in Hyderabad. The reservations cover 10 Municipal Corporations and 121 Municipalities, following constitutional and statutory provisions for local body elections.

The reservation distribution among the 10 Municipal Corporations includes one seat for Scheduled Castes (SC), one for Scheduled Tribes (ST), three for Backward Classes (BC) including one for women, and five for the General category, of which four are reserved for women. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has been specifically reserved for a woman candidate from the General category, marking a significant step in urban governance representation.

The corporation-wise allocation shows Kothagudem Corporation reserved for ST (General), Ramagundam Corporation for SC (General), and Mahabubnagar Corporation for BC (Woman). Mancherial and Karimnagar Corporations have been allocated to BC (General) category, while Greater Warangal Corporation falls under the General category. The corporations of Khammam, Nalgonda, and Nizamabad have been reserved for women under the General category.

For the 121 Municipalities across Telangana, the reservation pattern includes 17 seats for Scheduled Castes, 5 for Scheduled Tribes, 38 for Backward Classes, and 61 for the General category. This distribution ensures proportional representation across all social categories while maintaining the overall commitment of allocating half of all posts to women candidates, strengthening their role in local urban administration.

Government officials stated that the reservation process for municipal wards and corporation divisions is expected to be completed by Saturday evening. The final reservation list will be forwarded to the Telangana State Election Commission (SEC) by late Saturday night or Sunday morning. Once the formal Government Order (GO) is issued, the State Election Commission is anticipated to announce the municipal election schedule within one or two days.

The reservation pattern is set to influence political strategies ahead of the local body polls, with a strong emphasis on women’s participation across urban local bodies in Telangana. The allocation follows legal requirements for social representation while ensuring gender parity in leadership positions at the municipal level. The State Election Commission will take charge of conducting the elections once it receives the official notification from the government.
