The Telangana government has sanctioned five District Medical and Health Officers (DMHOs) for the people of Greater Hyderabad. This decision was made to improve the primary healthcare system in the city. The Health Minister, T Harish Rao, formed a special committee to strengthen the Directorate of Public Health, which provides healthcare services to the public. The government approved the committee’s proposals and issued GO No 142 on Thursday. This directive will help allocate appropriate medical staff based on patient needs.

Previously, Hyderabad had only one DMHO despite its population exceeding one crore. The government responded proactively and approved the establishment of five new DMHOs. These new DMHOs will be located strategically in different GHMC zones. With these additions, there will be a total of six DMHOs under GHMC and 38 across the State.

To ensure equal distribution of resources, the government reorganized Primary Health Centres (PHCs). They also sanctioned PHCs in newly formed mandals and upgraded existing PHCs to hospitals in 30 mandals. Additionally, sufficient staff will be hired to strengthen Urban Primary Health Centres (UPHCs) across the State.

In a strategic move, dental assistant surgeons have been included in the services of TVVP hospitals. The Government TB Hospital in Ananthagiri, Vikarabad district, is now under the oversight of the Director of Medical Education. Furthermore, 1,712 posts have been designated as supernumerary roles to enhance resource utilization.

The rationalization process did not affect the Multipurpose Health Assistant (Female) cadre, ensuring stability amidst changes. This comprehensive process, which took three months, demonstrates the government’s commitment to aligning resources with patient needs.
