In Hyderabad, Telangana Vigilance Commissioner MG Gopal emphasized the need for a solid energy efficiency plan to meet India’s climate goals. With over 35 years in public service, he stressed that energy efficiency is crucial for both the environment and the economy.
India aims to cut one billion tonnes of carbon emissions, reduce GDP emission intensity by 45% by 2030, and reach net zero by 2070. Gopal believes southern states, especially Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, are key to these goals. He noted that focusing on energy efficiency in these areas could lower global emissions by nearly 20%.
In discussions with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Gopal talked about innovative projects like the BEE’s ADEETIE scheme. This program helps small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) use energy-efficient technologies, reducing greenhouse gases and improving their market competitiveness.
Key features of the ADEETIE Scheme include a Rs1,000 crore budget, with Rs875 crore for interest subsidies. It offers loans from Rs10 lakh to Rs15 crore, with a 5% interest subsidy for micro and small enterprises and 3% for medium ones. A minimum of 10% energy savings is required. Target sectors include pharmaceuticals, textiles, food processing, steel re-rolling, and ceramics. The scheme is expected to attract Rs9,000 crore in investments and promises up to 20% energy savings in Telangana’s Medak pharmaceutical cluster, with similar results expected across other industrial areas in India.
Gopal praised Telangana’s support for national initiatives like UJALA (Affordable LEDs for All), e-Mobility, and the Clean and Green Energy Policy 2025. He said these efforts show the state’s dedication to both ecological and economic advancement. He also highlighted the Musi River Development Project, which aims to merge environmental restoration with economic growth.
