Hyderabad: Telangana police officials have asked the central government for more help in their fight against Left-wing extremism (LWE). They said they need more forces and funds, warning that if they become too relaxed, future problems might arise, even though things are currently under control.
In the past, the central government has supported districts affected by Maoist activities. This support has included sending central forces and providing funds to build infrastructure like police stations, roads, schools, and cell towers. On Monday, a high-level meeting took place in Delhi. Union Home Minister Amit Shah led the meeting, and Telangana’s Chief Minister, Revanth Reddy, also joined to talk about issues related to LWE in the state.
Telangana shares a border with Dandakaranya, a Maoist stronghold in Chhattisgarh, which keeps the risk of Maoist activity alive. Although the situation in Telangana has gotten better, the police still keep a close watch to stop Maoists from crossing the border. Recently, however, the central government has been reducing its support. It has removed some Telangana districts from the list of Maoist-affected areas and is thinking about moving CRPF battalions stationed at the border to other states.
There is a worry that Maoists may enter Telangana due to the increasing pressure on them from security forces in Chhattisgarh. Because of this, Telangana police have said it is important to keep central forces along the border. During the meeting, Telangana officials presented a detailed plan, showing the importance of surveillance, intelligence gathering, field operations, and working with local people to fight extremism. They called on the central government to continue its support so that the fight against LWE can be successful, especially since the central government aims to eliminate LWE by March 2026.
