The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) and the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport (IFAT) workers have expressed their support for the nationwide truckers’ protest. They are also demanding that the government withdraw the new penal law against hit-and-run cases.
The President of TGPWU and the National General Secretary of IFAT, Shaik Salauddin, stated that the new penal law, which includes up to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine for hit-and-run cases, is causing concern among transporters. They are worried that this law will lead to a shortage of drivers for heavy vehicles. Salauddin emphasized that there is already a shortage of 25-30% of drivers in the transport industry, and this law will only worsen the situation.
Salauddin further mentioned that the law was implemented without consulting representatives from the transport department. He explained that the provision of up to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to Rs 7 lakh in hit-and-run cases is causing panic among drivers. Many drivers are considering quitting their jobs, and this law will discourage young people from entering this field. Salauddin stated that they have shown their support to the State and national-level bodies and highlighted the significant employment opportunities created by the roughly one lakh taxis/cabs in the State and over 1.5 million taxis in India. He criticized the provision as one-sided and poorly thought out, which is discouraging those involved in this sector.
