The Telangana State Women’s Commission summoned actor Sivaji for an inquiry following his controversial comments about women artistes made during the promotional campaign of his film “Dandora”.
Actor Sivaji appeared before the Commission on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. and tendered an unconditional apology for his remarks. During the inquiry, he admitted his mistake and stated that he was withdrawing his comments in their entirety.
The actor assured the Commission that he would speak about and behave towards women with dignity and respect in the future. He further informed that he would incorporate changes in films associated with him, following the suggestions of the Women’s Commission.
Smt. Nerella Sharada, Chairperson of the Telangana State Women’s Commission, questioned the actor on how harassment could be justified by attributing it to women’s attire. She pointed out that incidents of harassment also occur against children and elderly women.
The Chairperson raised concerns about why women artistes face harassment even when appearing in traditional attire such as sarees. She questioned whether the actor bears responsibility to speak out on issues such as the casting couch prevalent in the film industry.
The Commission emphasized that only when rights and responsibilities are viewed with equal importance can women in society live with dignity and personal freedom. It clearly stated that no individual has the right to make inappropriate remarks or attempt to control others through moral policing.
The Commission observed that in recent incidents at public events, instead of ensuring protection to women artistes, attention is being diverted towards their attire while event organizers are not being held accountable. Such remarks were stated to be harmful to society and particularly detrimental to the dignity of women.
The Commission advised that film producers and directors must act responsibly while portraying women’s roles and costumes in films if they have a sense of responsibility towards women and society. It also instructed organizers of film promotion events to take adequate measures to ensure the safety and security of women artistes.
The Telangana State Women’s Commission remains committed to preserving culture and traditions while safeguarding the dignity and rights of women.
