Hyderabad: In a significant step towards sustainable operations in the entertainment sector, Allu Cinemas at Kokapet (Narsingi) has partnered with Freyr Energy, one of India’s premier rooftop solar companies, to install a 727 kW solar power system at its multiplex facility. The project marks a major investment in renewable energy infrastructure for commercial entertainment spaces in the region.
Built with an investment of Rs 2.27 crore, the solar installation stands as one of the largest for a cinema complex in the area. The project underscores the increasing trend of commercial establishments adopting clean energy solutions to power their operations while reducing their carbon footprint.
The newly commissioned solar plant is designed to meet nearly 60 per cent of the cinema’s overall power consumption. This substantial contribution to the multiplex’s energy needs represents a major shift from conventional power sources to renewable energy, setting a benchmark for other entertainment venues in the state.
The financial benefits of the project are equally impressive. The initiative is expected to bring down the annual electricity expenditure from approximately Rs 52 lakh to nearly Rs 5 lakh, resulting in estimated yearly savings of Rs 77-80 lakh. These figures demonstrate the strong economic viability of large-scale solar adoption for energy-intensive commercial operations.
Beyond cost savings, the environmental impact of the installation is significant. The solar power system is expected to help reduce nearly 750 tonnes of CO₂ emissions every year. To ensure optimal performance, the solar panels are equipped with an automated high-pressure sprinkler cleaning system, which maintains peak efficiency with minimal manual intervention.
Radhika Choudary, Co-Founder of Freyr Energy, commented on the partnership, stating, “As sustainability becomes increasingly important, solar energy is emerging as a smart solution for energy-intensive spaces like movie theatres. By adopting solar, cinemas can significantly reduce dependence on conventional power sources and lower operational costs. We are delighted to support an initiative that makes entertainment more sustainable.”
Allu Aravind of Allu Cinemas emphasized the practical benefits of the project, saying, “This is a meaningful step for us. Through the solarisation of Allu Cineplex with Freyr Energy, we are integrating clean energy into our operations practically and efficiently. Cinemas consume large amounts of power, and this move will help optimise electricity usage while improving long-term operational efficiency.”
The project represents a future-ready initiative that aligns sustainability goals with business efficiency. The installation at Allu Cinemas Kokapet is expected to serve as a model for other entertainment venues looking to transition to renewable energy sources while maintaining operational excellence and reducing environmental impact.
