Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has restarted the restoration of the historic Sardar Mahal near Charminar. This project aims to preserve the building’s heritage using careful techniques that maintain its original look and structure. GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan instructed officials to focus on restoring these old structures in the city’s historic area.
The restoration of Sardar Mahal was paused because contractors’ payments were delayed. Now, the work has resumed and is expected to finish by March 2026.
An official from the Quli Qutb Shah Urban Development Authority (QQSUDA) mentioned that the Sardar Mahal will feature an art gallery, a cafe, and heritage accommodations similar to the Neemrana Fort Palace in Rajasthan. This project costs Rs 30 crore.
On Tuesday, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan inspected the site to review the heritage restoration. He was accompanied by MLA Zulfiqar Ali, MLC Mirza Rahmat Baig, and other officials from the Charminar Zone.
The team checked the progress of the restoration, ensuring the area’s unique historical charm remains intact.
Historians note that Sardar Mahal was built in 1900 by Nizam VI Mir Mahboob Ali Khan in a European style. He constructed it for his consort, Sardar Begum, who refused to live there as it didn’t meet her expectations.
The officials also visited the old bus stand near Charminar, where the government plans to build a modern multi-level parking (MLP) complex through a public-private partnership.
This MLP complex will cover 3,500 square meters and provide parking for 145-150 cars and 150 bikes. It will also have a hawker zone and commercial shops. The area is popular with visitors, but lacks sufficient parking.
Features of the project include automated parking systems, payment kiosks, organized commercial spaces, a rooftop garden, CCTV security, fire safety systems, and emergency exits.
