Hyderabad: The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, is urging State Designated Agencies (SDAs) to enhance awareness campaigns about energy-saving practices. These campaigns aim to save 22.5 billion kWh of energy annually.
The residential sector consumes 35 to 40 percent of India’s total energy. Residential Welfare Associations (RWAs) can play a key role in promoting energy-efficient habits and technologies in homes. During a recent meeting, BEE Secretary Milind Deore highlighted the importance of using high-efficiency appliances like air conditioners, refrigerators, and ceiling fans to cut electricity use and costs. He also encouraged setting air conditioners to 24°C or higher to save energy. “Changing daily habits and using efficient appliances can lead to significant savings for consumers and the country,” Deore stated.
BEE estimates that implementing energy-saving practices could save 22.5 billion kWh of electricity each year, leading to major economic and environmental benefits. For example, a standard 75W ceiling fan used for 16 hours daily consumes 1.2 kWh/day, costing Rs 2,857 annually. In contrast, a 32W Brushless DC (BLDC) fan under the same usage consumes only 0.51 kWh/day, reducing the annual cost to Rs 1,208.
The Southern SDAs, particularly the Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TSREDCO), have been actively participating in campaigns like World Environment Day. BEE praised these efforts and encouraged all SDAs to continue this work.
These initiatives have already led to significant results, saving 81.64 billion units of electricity and Rs 54,323 crore in energy costs, while avoiding 58 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
BEE remains committed to fostering sustainability and encourages SDAs to collaborate with RWAs, schools, and local organizations to promote energy-saving practices. “Creating a cleaner, energy-secure future starts at home, and RWAs can lead this movement,” Deore emphasized.
