Hyderabad: On Thursday, BRS leaders urged Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to file a legal complaint against the Karnataka government. They are concerned about Karnataka’s plan to raise the Almatti dam height, which could harm Telangana significantly.
In a press meet at Telangana Bhavan, senior leader B Vinod Kumar, along with S Bharat Kumar and P Shashidhar Reddy, addressed the issue. They mentioned that the Chief Ministers of Karnataka and Maharashtra met on Wednesday. The Krishna Tribunal ruled on the Almatti project height in 2013, causing concerns in the former Andhra Pradesh. The AP government then approached the Supreme Court, which paused the tribunal’s decision. In 2014, the Telangana government sought to maintain this stay.
Despite the Supreme Court’s pause, Karnataka aims to increase the Almatti dam height. They plan to acquire 1.33 lakh acres for this expansion, targeting a budget of Rs 70,000 crore over two years, Vinod Kumar explained.
He noted that Karnataka, led by a Congress government, made this decision two days ago, yet CM Revanth Reddy has not responded. Kumar urged the Telangana government to act quickly against Karnataka’s plan, questioning why Reddy remains silent while Karnataka illegally raises the dam level.
Maharashtra CM Fadnavis reacted to Karnataka’s decision, warning that increasing the height could flood Sangli and Kolhapur districts. He pledged to oppose any height increase. Vinod Kumar demanded that Revanth Reddy focus on countering Karnataka’s actions rather than criticizing KCR.
Soma Bharat Kumar added that the former Congress government in unified AP set a water allocation of 299 TMC for Telangana and 511 TMC for AP. They falsely claim KCR agreed to 299 TMC, though Telangana never received more than 100 TMC of Krishna water.
