Hyderabad is facing a health challenge as the monsoon season begins in Telangana. The rains bring relief from heat but also increase the risk of dengue fever. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, responsible for spreading dengue, thrive in wet conditions. This illness causes high fever, severe headaches, and painful joints and muscles. If not treated quickly, it can become life-threatening.

Preventing dengue starts at home and in the community. The key is to eliminate stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. Regularly empty flowerpots, their saucers, old tires, buckets, and any containers that hold water. Keep drains and gutters clear to prevent them from becoming mosquito breeding sites.

For personal safety, wear long sleeves and pants to cover skin. Use mosquito repellents and install nets on beds and screens on doors and windows. These measures are especially important at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

Dr. Sivaranjani Santosh, a senior paediatrician from Hyderabad, emphasizes the importance of public involvement. She shares a simple rule: “No Water Puddles, No Dengue Troubles.” This encourages everyone to prevent water accumulation to stop the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.

Dr. Santosh also suggests families have a ‘dry day’ once a week. On this day, check homes and nearby areas for any hidden water sources. Look at air cooler trays, refrigerator drip pans, and discarded bottles or containers in gardens or balconies. Make sure they are completely dry. This regular habit is crucial to interrupt the mosquito life cycle and safeguard the community.
