Hyderabad is taking action to combat mosquito-borne diseases after recent rains. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is conducting anti-larva operations (ALO) and fogging in neighborhoods, lakes, nalas, and along the Musi River.
GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan has urged officials to ramp up efforts to control mosquitoes. On Monday, he held a conference call discussing mosquito control, sanitation, and court cases with Additional and Zonal Commissioners, as well as department heads.
During the meeting, the Commissioner noted that personnel involved in entomology have been assigned other tasks, neglecting the ALO program. He directed Zonal and Deputy Commissioners to ensure staff focus on these crucial mosquito control efforts.
RV Karnan also instructed the Additional Commissioner of Lakes and Health to extend a special sanitation drive in the city. He mandated a concentrated effort in other ward colonies and requested updates on the progress of these initiatives.
AC Sanitation Raghu Prasad reported that the pre-monsoon sanitation drive concluded in 120 wards from June 3 to June 25. During this period, 3,900 tons of construction waste and 5,400 tons of garbage were cleared.
The Commissioner advised the AC to allow 20 additional days for remaining colonies, starting June 26. He also emphasized the importance of addressing court cases promptly. Zonal Commissioners should appoint a nodal officer for court case management to ensure timely responses.
He suggested that Deputy Commissioners submit court responses, endorsed by the relevant Zonal Commissioner, and reach out to AC Legal at the head office for assistance.
On Monday, the GHMC targeted mosquito control at Shah Hatim Lake in Golconda. They used floating machines to remove water hyacinth and sprayed larvicide oil with drones. Karwan MLA Kausar Mohiuddin and GHMC officers inspected the operations.
