A nine-year-old male White Bengal Tiger at Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad passed away on Tuesday due to chronic renal failure. The tiger, named ‘Abhimanyu’, had been suffering from Nephritis, the first stage of a renal problem, and was undergoing treatment.
‘Abhimanyu’ was born in the zoo on January 1, 2015, to parents ‘Badri’ and ‘Dam’ ‘Surekha’/’Sameera’. The tiger had been unwell since April 21, 2023. Experts in veterinary medicine, tiger experts, and other zoos were consulted regarding Abhimanyu’s health condition. They recommended medications and treatments, but the tiger’s condition worsened, with the animal unable to wake up or walk properly since May 5, 2024.
The curator revealed that since May 2023, the tiger had been dealing with rheumatism and a lack of appetite. In the past three days leading up to its death on May 14, 2024, the tiger was critically ill, requiring fluid therapy and medications to try to revive it. Despite all efforts from the wildlife hospital, rescue center, dedicated veterinary doctors, and animal keepers, Abhimanyu could not be saved.
Post-mortem was conducted in the presence of veterinary experts from VBRI and CVSc, Hyderabad. The cause of death was determined to be chronic renal failure. Samples were collected and sent to VBRI for a detailed diagnosis. The curator expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Abhimanyu and mourned the passing of the majestic white tiger.
