Hyderabad is nearing the completion of its major sewage treatment plant (STP) project, one of the biggest urban sanitation efforts in India. After facing months of delays due to land and legal issues, officials have announced that all major obstacles are now cleared for smooth progress.
Padmaja, Chief General Manager of HMWSSB, stated that construction and legal challenges have been resolved. She mentioned that the projects are back on track and should be completed this year if the weather cooperates.
The city began this large-scale project in 2022 with a three-year timeline and a budget of Rs 3,800 crore. It aims to upgrade the sewage treatment system to support its fast-growing population. Currently, 18 STPs are complete and operational. Two more are under construction, with about 85% finished. Officials expect these to be completed in two months or by the end of 2025 at the latest. Once finished, these plants will significantly boost Hyderabad’s water management and environmental efforts. The operational STPs will help treat sewage more efficiently, cutting water pollution, improving public health, and meeting environmental standards.
Padmaja emphasized that completing the remaining plants will enhance the city’s wastewater management, preparing Hyderabad for future growth. The city aims to become one of the few Indian metros with a full sewage treatment network, promoting a cleaner and healthier environment.
