On Monday, the Telangana High Court postponed its decision on holding Panchayat elections in the region.
Six different groups had filed petitions asking for the immediate elections for Gram Panchayats, which were due in February. The government, represented by its lawyer, argued that the Backward Classes (BC) census was not yet finished. They requested more time, stressing the importance of completing the reservation process, which is essential for fair elections. They believed that conducting elections without proper reservations would violate the constitution.
The Court asked about the time needed to organize these elections. The State Election Commission suggested they would require at least 60 days. The petitioners’ lawyers argued firmly in court. They insisted that the government must hold elections within six months after the current body’s term ends, a rule not followed here. They proposed either holding elections or allowing the previous Sarpanchas to continue. They also pointed out that delays have stalled development projects and blocked the use of vital funds.
After considering both sides, the High Court reserved its decision. Everyone is now eagerly waiting for the Court’s ruling on these elections.
