Hyderabad: Over the weekend, the Cyberabad Traffic Police caught 272 people for drunk driving in late-night checks across different areas. This was part of a targeted effort to combat drunk driving. Police teams were set up to monitor and catch offenders. All those caught will face court proceedings.
Out of the 272 individuals, 227 were riding two-wheelers, 15 were in three-wheelers, 29 were driving cars, and one was operating a heavy vehicle. Most offenders had blood alcohol levels between 35 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml. Sixteen people had levels from 201 mg/100 ml to 300 mg/100 ml, and three had levels between 301 mg/100 ml and 500 mg/100 ml. The Miyapur zone had the highest number of cases at 55, followed by Shamshabad with 27, Balanagar with 24, and Jedimetla and Alwal reporting 20 cases each.
From August 11 to August 14, courts dealt with 299 drunk driving cases. Of these, 277 people were fined, and 22 were given jail sentences. Twenty-one individuals received a two-day jail term, and one person was jailed for three days. Additionally, 34 individuals were assigned social service as part of their penalty.
The Cyberabad Police emphasize that drunk driving is a serious crime. If someone drives drunk and causes a fatal accident, they will be charged under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which can lead to up to 10 years in prison and a fine. The police urge everyone to drive safely and responsibly.
