Hyderabad: The government in Telangana might decide soon on giving Rs 2,500 monthly to women through the Mahalakshmi scheme. This decision could be made during the Cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on July 25. The plan to support women financially has been on hold since the Congress took office.
The meeting will also discuss a 42% BC quota ordinance and the schedule for local elections.
Reports suggest that the state’s finance department is assessing the funds needed for this monthly aid to women. This initiative aims to attract women voters, potentially helping the Congress gain control in local elections. The government has faced criticism for not implementing this scheme, especially after it was highlighted during the 2023 Assembly elections. Delays have been due to financial issues.
The government has already gained support from women by offering free RTC bus travel, interest-free loans for women self-help groups, and financial help for solar projects and hiring buses for RTC. Establishing eligibility and financial planning is crucial before the State Election Commission announces local election dates.
State Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao has asked department heads to submit approved agenda items for the Cabinet meeting. Discussions may also cover funding for various welfare programs.
