Hyderabad – To meet the rising electricity needs in the coming years, Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu has asked power departments to create a detailed five-year action plan. The goal is to ensure consistent and high-quality power for all areas across Telangana.
On Friday, Bhatti held a review meeting at the State Secretariat with top officials from power utilities. They discussed power demand forecasts and shared their strategies to handle future challenges.
Sandeep Kumar Sultania, Principal Secretary of the Energy Department, revealed the current figures. Telangana’s power generation capacity stands at 20,883 megawatts (MW), while the total contracted capacity is 26,183 MW. According to the Central Electricity Authority, peak power demand is expected to hit 24,215 MW by the year 2030.
To prepare for this, major power producers like Singareni, NTPC, and Genco are already working on increasing generation. Sultania also emphasized the importance of planning ahead to avoid future shortages.
Krishna Bhaskar, Chairman and Managing Director of TG Transco, and Musharraf Faruqui, CMD of the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TSSPDCL), highlighted the rising power consumption. They noted that supply during peak hours is becoming more challenging.
Anila, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of REDCO, provided updates on renewable energy. She said Telangana currently has 7,913 MW of solar power capacity. The state aims to more than double this to 19,874 MW by 2030, helping to meet demand while promoting clean energy.
Bhatti stressed the urgency of acting now to secure the state’s energy future. He assured full government support to carry out all power sector plans. He also instructed the DISCOM CMDs to set up electrical equipment stores in all newly formed district headquarters. Right now, such stores exist only in the older, combined districts.
This move will help improve the response time and efficiency of local power services as the state continues to grow.
