Hyderabad: Telangana’s Fine Rice Distribution Scheme is being called a major breakthrough in food security and public welfare by State Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister Capt N Uttam Kumar Reddy and TPCC President M Mahesh Kumar Goud.
They said the program, launched by the Congress government, is setting an example for the rest of the country. The leaders also mentioned that the public has responded very positively to the scheme and stressed that it will continue in the future, regardless of who is in power.
On Friday, Uttam and Goud held a Zoom meeting with senior Congress leaders to check on how the fine rice distribution scheme and the Rabi crop purchasing process are progressing.
The Minister said the Rabi harvest is finished in many districts and almost done in others. Procurement centres are being set up throughout the state, and district officials have been told to make sure the process runs smoothly.
Uttam criticized the previous BJP and BRS governments, saying they never distributed fine rice. “They gave poor-quality rice to 2.8 crore people and spent Rs 10,000 crore. We are now spending over Rs 13,000 crore to provide fine rice to 3.10 crore people. That shows how serious we are,” he said.
He also mentioned that the earlier rice was of such low quality that many people had stopped eating it. “Our government made a big change. Yes, it’s more expensive, but we are happy to spend more so poor families can eat good quality food with dignity,” he added.
Mahesh Kumar Goud noted that Telangana is the first state in the country to offer fine rice through ration shops. He said the scheme was launched during the festivals of Ugadi and Ramzan, making it even more special for the people.
