Hyderabad is taking strong steps to improve road safety and fix aging infrastructure. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has approved a major repair project for two key flyovers — the Begumpet Road Over Bridge (RoB) and the RK Puram RoB. The total budget for these upgrades is ₹20 crore.
GHMC’s Projects Division has floated tenders for both bridges. The Begumpet RoB will receive ₹14.6 crore for repairs, while the RK Puram RoB in Secunderabad Cantonment will get ₹4.6 crore. The work is expected to take about 18 months to complete.
During construction, traffic will not be allowed on these bridges. Vehicles will be redirected to alternate routes to ensure public safety and smoother work progress.
The Begumpet RoB, opened in 1980, plays a vital role in connecting areas like Somajiguda, Ameerpet, Prakash Nagar, Paradise, and Secunderabad. Over time, increased traffic led to an extension linking it to the old CM camp office. However, the bridge now suffers from worn-out joints, causing vibrations, especially when trains pass underneath.
The RK Puram RoB connects commuters to Sainikpuri, A S Rao Nagar, and ECIL. Like Begumpet, this bridge also has serious wear and tear. Cracks and widening gaps in the slabs have started affecting traffic flow.
GHMC engineers plan to carry out detailed structural repairs. These include replacing damaged bearings, fixing slabs and girders, and sealing concrete cracks using micro-concreting techniques. This approach strengthens the bridge and extends its life.
Currently, around 200 people live in two homeless shelters under the Begumpet RoB. As the repairs begin, GHMC has asked the Urban Community Development (UCD) department to help relocate these residents. Officials are considering moving the shelters temporarily for up to two years or dismantling them permanently.
Repair work on the RK Puram RoB will follow similar methods used on the Lalapet and Adikmet bridges, which were successfully restored earlier.
Once the repairs are done, both bridges are expected to offer safer and smoother travel for thousands of daily commuters in Hyderabad.
