Hyderabad – The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is taking new steps to support the transgender community by creating better job opportunities and improving their quality of life.
On Wednesday, a key meeting was held at the GHMC headquarters. It brought together transgender representatives, NGOs, and officials from the Urban Community Development (UCD) department. The aim was to gather ideas on how to include transgender individuals in various GHMC programs and services.
Sneha Shabarish, GHMC Additional Commissioner, said the government wants to help transgenders find jobs that match their interests and skills. She added that GHMC will offer training programs to help them build careers not just within the corporation but also in other sectors.
Chandrakanth Reddy, UCD Additional Commissioner, stated that these efforts follow the orders of the Chief Minister. He said the goal is to help transgender individuals gain financial independence through diverse job roles. He encouraged participants to choose fields that suit their education and personal preferences. Proper training will be provided to help them succeed.
For those who may not qualify for regular jobs, GHMC plans to create self-help groups (SHGs). These groups will help individuals start small businesses and gain access to bank loans. Initially, three transgender SHGs will be formed, and more will follow. This move is part of a larger government initiative to give equal opportunities to the transgender population.
GHMC is opening up a variety of roles in its departments, including:
– Security guard positions
– Green marshals for cleanliness drives
– Park security staff
– Jobs at HMWS&SB reservoirs
– Assistants at metro stations
– Workers for water quality testing under the Amrut scheme
– Technicians for street light maintenance after training
– Para-medical jobs at basti hospitals
Training for these jobs will also be provided by different NGOs, helping people move toward self-employment.
Yadagiri Rao, Additional Commissioner for Sports, pointed out that the sports sector also offers many job possibilities for transgender individuals. Whether someone has formal education or not, there are roles available that can lead to a stable income.
The GHMC and the state government are working together to ensure the transgender community gets the support, training, and opportunities they need to lead better lives.
