In the heart of Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills, there is a street called Road No 12. Every morning, a GHMC sanitation worker named Derangula Narayanamma walks on this street. She doesn’t live in a grand house like the other people in the area, but she is dedicated to her job of keeping the streets clean.

Narayanamma has been working for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation for over 20 years. She is known for her commitment and hard work in maintaining cleanliness in the city. Rain or shine, day or night, she tirelessly works behind the scenes to ensure that the streets are tidy.

Narayanamma’s presence is felt by everyone in the neighborhood. Her name is whispered by both the poorest and richest residents. But it’s not just her name that stands out, it’s the beautiful melodies she creates with her broom each morning.

Her day begins at 3 am, while most people are still asleep. She prepares herself for her task and starts sweeping the streets at 5:30 am. Her sweeping motions are rhythmic and purposeful, making the streets clean and beautiful.

Narayanamma’s journey towards enlightenment was guided by her mentor Nityananda Rajeshwaryulu. She started this job over two decades ago and has found spiritual nourishment and higher understanding through her work.

Unfortunately, the land given to her by the government ended up in the hands of intermediaries, causing her distress and a sense of injustice. She hopes that the new government in Telangana will help her get justice in her case. The land was supposed to be a source of security and opportunity for her, but it has become a source of disappointment.
