    Hyderabad:
Can school students create their own inventions and protect them? As the world celebrates World Intellectual Property Day on April 26, let’s see how school students in Telangana are stepping into the world of innovation and entrepreneurship. This effort is part of the new National Education Policy 2020.

According to the School Innovation Council (SIC), a program by the Union Ministry of Education, students from 939 schools in Telangana have submitted 149 innovations and 59 activity entries. This includes work from 765 PM Shri schools and 174 other schools.

This initiative supports the National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Promotion Policy (NIEPP). It is built on six key areas: changing mindsets, providing training, improving infrastructure, supporting teachers, encouraging partnerships between schools and communities, and helping students understand intellectual property rights.

The program is designed for students from Classes VI to XII and works in three stages: foundation, preparatory, and secondary. Students first enter the program through the School Innovation Contest (SIC). Teachers are trained through the School Innovation Ambassador Training Program (SIATP) to better guide students in their creative journeys.

Another key part is the Skilling Students in Design Thinking and Innovation (SSDT&D) program. Here, students can take their ideas, create models, and even build real products. The KAPILA scheme (Kalam Program for IP Literacy and Awareness) teaches students and teachers about protecting their ideas legally by filing patents.

Speaking to The Hans India, Prabhakar, a physics teacher from a non-PM Shri school, said the program is very ambitious. He explained that it encourages creativity from as early as Class VI and helps students not only invent but also protect their ideas. The goal is to create a full system where schools can support students in filing for intellectual property rights.

Additionally, KAPILA provides financial help for filing patents in educational institutions, making it easier for young inventors to safeguard their creations.
