Hyderabad has officially emerged as a mega city following the merger of 27 municipalities into the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), according to GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan.
The Commissioner announced that the merger has led to a massive expansion of the city’s administrative boundaries. The GHMC area has grown from 650 square kilometers to 2,053 square kilometers, marking a significant transformation in the city’s geographical footprint.
To manage the expanded jurisdiction effectively, the State government has undertaken major administrative restructuring. The number of GHMC wards has been doubled from 150 to 300, ensuring better representation and governance across the enlarged city limits.
The administrative zones have also been increased from six to 12, while the number of circles has expanded from 30 to 60. This restructuring aims to bring civic services closer to residents and improve administrative efficiency.
Commissioner Karnan highlighted that new zones have been established at strategic locations including Uppal, Quthbullapur, Malkajgiri, Shamshabad, Golkonda and Rajendranagar. These new zones will serve as key administrative centers for their respective areas.
The Commissioner emphasized that the establishment of additional zonal and circle offices would enable faster and more accessible delivery of civic services to the public. The expanded administrative structure is expected to accelerate development works across the city.
The merger represents one of the most significant administrative reorganizations in Hyderabad’s recent history. With the integration of 27 municipalities, the city now encompasses a much larger population and area, requiring enhanced infrastructure and services.
The new administrative setup is designed to address the challenges of managing a mega city while maintaining efficiency in service delivery. The increased number of wards, zones, and circles will allow for more localized governance and quicker response to civic issues.
According to Commissioner Karnan, the expanded administrative framework would facilitate better coordination between different departments and ensure that development reaches all parts of the enlarged city in a systematic manner.
