Hyderabad is planning a major expansion by merging nearby municipalities into the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). This move aims to create a Greater City Corporation (GCC) to better manage the city’s growth and infrastructure needs.

24 Municipalities to Merge with GHMC

Starting in January 2025, the government will merge 24 municipalities into the GHMC as their terms come to an end. This will help improve the city’s governance and allow for a more streamlined approach to managing development. The government expects to finalize the creation of the GCC by December 2025. A special committee will be formed to assess infrastructure requirements and revenue resources to ensure a smooth transition.

    Balancing Growth Across All Areas

The expansion plan will focus on merging both developed areas, like Serilingampally, and less-developed areas, such as the Old City. The goal is to ensure balanced growth and financial stability across the region. This approach will help maintain equity in development and make sure that all parts of the city benefit from the new changes.

    Expanding the City’s Boundaries

Once the merger is complete, the new GCC will cover a vast area of 1,800 to 2,000 square kilometers, compared to the current 650 square kilometers under the GHMC. To manage this larger area efficiently, the government is considering dividing it into three smaller corporations, each managing 600-650 square kilometers.

    Preparing Hyderabad for the Future

The expansion is designed to help Hyderabad grow in a balanced and sustainable way. By merging nearby municipalities, the city will be better prepared to adapt to future challenges. The GCC will eventually help transform Hyderabad into a global metropolis, boosting its competitiveness and improving the quality of life for residents.
