Hyderabad Faces Growing Traffic Gridlock as Vehicle Numbers Surge

Hyderabad Faces Growing Traffic Gridlock as Vehicle Numbers Surge
Text Size: 100%

Hyderabad’s rapid urban expansion and rising vehicle ownership are pushing the city’s road infrastructure to its limits. Once praised for relatively smoother traffic compared to other metros, the city is now witnessing congestion levels that increasingly resemble those of Bengaluru.

Traffic speeds have declined over the years, with average speeds during peak hours falling significantly. Officials note that Hyderabad’s road network has largely remained unchanged in capacity, even as the number of vehicles has grown at a sharp pace over the past decade.

Explosive Growth in Vehicles

The number of registered vehicles in Greater Hyderabad has surged dramatically. From under 50 lakh vehicles a few years ago, the total has now crossed 90 lakh, with projections suggesting it could touch one crore by 2027–28 if current trends continue.

Two-wheelers account for the largest share of road space, followed by cars and other four-wheelers. Each year, lakhs of new vehicles are added to the city’s roads, intensifying pressure on already congested corridors.

Urban mobility experts warn that unless significant investments are made in public transport and demand management, traffic congestion will worsen, leading to increased travel time, higher fuel consumption, and rising air pollution.

Road Infrastructure Struggling to Keep Pace

While Hyderabad has expanded through flyovers, underpasses, and elevated corridors, experts say these measures alone are insufficient. The growth in private vehicle ownership has outpaced infrastructure upgrades, creating bottlenecks at major junctions and arterial roads.

Peak-hour commute times have increased considerably, especially in business hubs such as HITEC City, Gachibowli, and other commercial corridors. The strain is further compounded by inadequate last-mile connectivity and limited adoption of public transport.

Impact on Quality of Life

Prolonged travel times are affecting productivity and quality of life. Traffic congestion contributes not only to economic losses but also to environmental concerns, with higher emissions and deteriorating air quality becoming major urban challenges.

Urban planners caution that without integrated mobility planning, Hyderabad risks following the trajectory of other congested metropolitan cities.

Suggested Measures to Ease Congestion

Experts have outlined a multi-pronged strategy to manage traffic more effectively. Key recommendations include:

  • Strengthening public transport through metro expansion, improved bus services, and suburban rail connectivity.
  • Integrated ticketing and reliable schedules to encourage commuters to shift from private vehicles.
  • Dedicated bus lanes and signal priority for mass transit systems.
  • Smart traffic management systems using adaptive signals and real-time data monitoring.
  • Congestion pricing and parking reforms in high-density commercial areas.
  • Encouraging staggered work hours and remote working to reduce peak-hour pressure.

Learning from Global Cities

Cities such as Singapore, Seoul, Amsterdam, and Paris have adopted technology-driven traffic management systems, congestion pricing, integrated transport networks, and improved pedestrian infrastructure to manage urban mobility challenges.

Experts suggest Hyderabad can adopt similar best practices, including smart signalling systems, enhanced public transport infrastructure, and greater focus on non-motorised transport such as cycling and walking.

The Road Ahead

Authorities acknowledge that congestion management requires a combination of infrastructure upgrades, policy reforms, and behavioural changes. With vehicle numbers continuing to rise and urban sprawl expanding, long-term planning will be critical to prevent gridlock from becoming the city’s defining feature.

How Hyderabad addresses its traffic challenges in the coming years will play a crucial role in determining whether it can sustain its ambition of being a globally competitive metropolitan city.
