Hyderabad: The Hyderabad City Cybercrime Police made a major discovery by identifying 124 social media accounts promoting 539 paid ads for online gaming and betting apps in February.
These ads targeted young users, offering promises of easy money, guaranteed returns, bonuses, and referral rewards. The police revealed that these profiles spread promotional content and referral links to entice people into betting and illegal gambling.
As a precaution, the authorities reported these 124 profiles to social media platforms, which have since removed them to prevent further illegal activity.
Investigations are ongoing to find those behind these accounts and their financial networks. Officials warned of severe consequences for those involved.
The cybercrime police advised against participating in online betting and gambling, noting that violators face legal penalties.
Many online betting apps operate from overseas, illegally functioning in India. They lure users with false promises of high returns, risking financial loss and data theft.
People are urged not to download or use unauthorized betting apps. Promoting or sharing these links on social media can also lead to legal issues.
Authorities encourage reporting suspicious ads, links, and profiles to the nearest cybercrime police station or through the official portal. They also urge parents and guardians to educate the youth about the dangers and legal issues of online betting.
