Hyderabad Police have issued an urgent alert to women and families across the city as complaints of arranged marriage scams continue to surge. The warning comes after a significant increase in cases reported to She Teams, highlighting a disturbing trend where fraudsters exploit traditional marriage setups to extort money and manipulate victims.

The scammers typically approach families through seemingly legitimate channels including relatives, popular matrimony platforms, or established community networks. This traditional entry point helps them gain immediate trust and credibility with unsuspecting families who believe they are engaging in a genuine marriage proposal.

According to police reports, the accused conduct formal family meetings and present well-crafted background details to appear trustworthy. They push for a quick engagement ceremony, which creates social commitment and places emotional pressure on the family. Once the engagement becomes public knowledge, victims find it harder to back out due to fear of social embarrassment.

After the engagement, the accused begins building emotional closeness with the woman and insists on private meetings. Using manipulative phrases like “We are getting married anyway,” the fraudster normalizes physical intimacy before marriage. In several cases, emotional pressure escalates to coercion, leaving victims vulnerable and trapped.

The scam takes a darker turn once intimacy occurs, as the accused suddenly changes behavior. Fresh financial demands emerge, including requests for heavy cash payments, additional dowry beyond initial agreements, expensive gifts, or even property transfers. These demands are often accompanied by explicit threats to cancel the wedding if money is not paid.

The criminals deliberately exploit the family’s fear of public shame after the engagement has been announced within the community. This psychological manipulation continues until either the demanded money is paid or the victim gathers enough courage to file a complaint with authorities. Many families initially hesitate to approach police due to social stigma.

Hyderabad Police have advised families to conduct independent verification of prospective grooms’ credentials through proper channels. They emphasize avoiding any financial transactions that fall outside legal norms and proper documentation. Authorities stress that families should not feel pressured into making payments based on threats or emotional manipulation.

Police officials have identified clear red flags that families should watch for during the arranged marriage process. Any pressure for pre-marital intimacy should be treated as a serious warning sign, along with sudden monetary demands after engagement. The She Teams remain available to receive complaints and assist victims who find themselves trapped in such situations.
