The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) has greenlit a major infrastructure project with a revised budget of Rs 308 crore for constructing a Rail over Bridge (RoB) near Serilingampally railway station. The project, aimed at resolving chronic traffic congestion and waterlogging issues in the area, is expected to begin within the next couple of months pending administrative sanction. The revised cost was approved during the CMC’s 2nd Standing Committee meeting, marking a significant step forward for the long-awaited infrastructure development.
CMC Chief Engineer Nityanandam confirmed that the RoB has been proposed under the Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure (H-CITI) programme. The project cost witnessed a substantial increase from the initial estimate of Rs 125 crore to Rs 308 crore due to design modifications mandated by railway authorities. Once administrative sanction is received from the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) department, construction work will commence, with completion targeted within two years.
The Serilingampally underpass on the Mumbai old highway has been a persistent problem for daily commuters and IT professionals for several years. The narrow tunnel experiences severe traffic bottlenecks during peak hours, with multiple attempts to improve vehicular flow proving unsuccessful. During monsoon seasons, waterlogging becomes a regular occurrence at the underpass, which serves as a critical transit point for residents from BHEL townships, nearby colonies, Patancheru, and Chandanagar traveling towards Gachibowli, Madhapur, and the Financial District.
The new infrastructure will feature a four-lane RoB with a two-lane up-ramp from Gulmohar Junction, incorporating modern viaduct design. Additionally, the project includes two unidirectional, first-level flyovers between Gachibowli and BHEL, each approximately 8.5 metres wide, supported by 29 pillars. The RoB will connect Gulmohar Junction to Tara Nagar, providing seamless connectivity and significantly improving traffic flow in the corridor.
The project will impact a total of 214 properties, including both residential and commercial establishments, according to a town planning officer. The land acquisition process will be initiated once administrative sanction is received from the MA&UD department. Affected property owners will be compensated as per government norms, and the acquisition process is expected to be completed in a phased manner to minimize disruption to residents and businesses in the area.
