Hyderabad: The Chief Election Commissioner of India, Gyanesh Kumar, said that the Election Commission (EC) plays a major role in educating people about how elections work. He made these comments during a one-day training session held at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management in New Delhi.
This training brought together Media Nodal Officers, Social Media Nodal Officers, and District Public Relations Officers (DPROs) from across India. Telangana was represented by B. Hari Singh (Deputy CEO), B. Bhavani Shankar (Social Media Nodal Officer), and P. Sitaram (DPRO from Wanaparthy district).
Mr. Kumar shared that the Election Commission involves about 1.5 crore people in its operations. This large team helps India conduct elections in a well-organized and fair way, which has earned global recognition.
He highlighted that the Commission works all year to ensure every eligible citizen is registered to vote. They conduct special updates to the voter list twice a year, even when elections aren’t happening, so voters can participate in local elections.
Mr. Kumar also explained that District Election Officers regularly meet with political parties to share information and address any concerns. He emphasized that elections are carried out according to the rules in the Representation of the People Acts of 1950 and 1951, along with the Registration Act of 1960.
In remote areas where vehicles can’t reach, he said that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are transported using horses and camels to make sure no citizen is left out of voting.
He urged for more awareness among the public and political leaders about their responsibilities in elections and the importance of keeping voter lists accurate.
The training program was attended by Chief Electoral Officers from Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, and Delhi, along with media and public relations officers from all over the country.
