In December 2024, Mudavath Kishan took on the role of Additional Deputy Commissioner in the Road Transport Department for the Mahabubnagar Region. Since then, he has been dedicated to enhancing vehicle registration services and ensuring operations run smoothly and transparently. Under his leadership, there has been a significant rise in electric vehicle (EV) registrations and a focus on road safety. He has launched several awareness campaigns and enforcement actions. Kishan discussed the department’s progress and goals in a recent interview.
The Road Transport Office (RTO) is responsible for new vehicle registrations, issuing fitness certificates, and enforcing road safety rules. Since Kishan’s appointment, efforts to tackle violations such as overloaded or expired vehicles have increased, with numerous cases filed under the Road Transport Vehicle Act. Road safety awareness is a major focus, with programs conducted for auto-rickshaw drivers, school bus owners, and school management. All school buses now undergo 100% fitness checks. Campaigns are also underway to promote pollution control, especially for vehicles older than 15 years.
Each day, about 70 to 75 new vehicles are registered at the Mahabubnagar RTO, totaling around 2,000 new registrations monthly.
A noticeable trend is the growing number of electric vehicle registrations. Without registration fees for EVs, many people prefer them over traditional vehicles, aligning with government efforts to reduce pollution. The registration process has been streamlined, eliminating the need for middlemen and making it transparent.
The registration process has been simplified to allow for quicker vehicle registration. The department aims to provide accessible services without the need for agents. Online services are promoted, and public grievances are addressed swiftly.
A special campaign targets owners of vehicles older than 15 years, which are more prone to pollution. About 60% of these vehicles fail fitness tests. Owners are encouraged to get their vehicles checked and make necessary repairs, as unfit vehicles will not be permitted on roads.
The Mahabubnagar RTO oversees five districts: Mahabubnagar, Jogulamba Gadwal, Narayanpet, Wanaparthy, and Nagarkurnool. Kishan supervises all operations across these areas. New policy reforms are anticipated from the state government to enhance licensing, vehicle fitness, and registration processes. The department remains committed to enforcing road safety and transport regulations to ensure safe travel.
Kishan urges vehicle owners to adhere to traffic rules, keep up with fitness and pollution checks, and avoid unauthorized agents. The RTO is dedicated to providing transparent and efficient service. Efforts to improve road safety, environmental awareness, and public service delivery will continue.
