Hyderabad: Telangana could soon emerge as a major player in India’s defence manufacturing sector, with a proposal under consideration to establish a BrahMos missile manufacturing facility in Devarakadra constituency of Mahabubnagar district. If approved, the project would become only the second BrahMos missile production facility in the country after the recently established unit in Uttar Pradesh.

The proposed facility is expected to be developed on approximately 416 acres of land identified near NH-44, one of India’s busiest national highways connecting Hyderabad and Bengaluru. The site is located around 100 kilometres from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad, providing strategic logistical advantages for defence manufacturing and exports.

Land Identified in Three Villages

According to officials and local representatives, the Telangana government has already identified land parcels in the villages of Chowdaripalli, Baswaipalli, and Jeenugurla in Devarakadra mandal for the proposed project.

The proposal reportedly follows discussions between representatives of BrahMos Aerospace and the Telangana government regarding the suitability of the location for a large-scale defence manufacturing ecosystem.

Government records indicate that the Industries Department had issued a memorandum in October 2025 related to land identification and preliminary project facilitation.

What is BrahMos?

BrahMos is one of the world’s fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles and is jointly developed by BrahMos Aerospace, an Indo-Russian joint venture. The missile is capable of being launched from land, sea, air and submarine platforms and forms a critical component of India’s strategic defence capabilities.

The missile has gained global attention for its speed, precision and versatility and has also become an important export product under India’s defence manufacturing ambitions.

Potential Investment and Employment

The proposed Telangana facility is expected to attract an initial investment of approximately ₹500 crore. Industry sources estimate that the project could directly and indirectly generate between 1,500 and 2,000 jobs, including opportunities in manufacturing, engineering, logistics, quality control, research and supporting industries.

Experts believe the project could also attract ancillary defence and aerospace companies to the region, helping create a larger defence manufacturing cluster in southern Telangana.

Part of India’s Defence Manufacturing Push

The proposed facility aligns with the Government of India’s broader initiatives such as Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat, which aim to increase domestic defence production and reduce dependence on imports.

India has significantly expanded its defence manufacturing capabilities in recent years, with several states competing to attract investments in aerospace, missile systems, drones, electronics and military equipment manufacturing.

Telangana has already established itself as an important aerospace and defence hub through the presence of organisations such as DRDO laboratories, Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), Mishra Dhatu Nigam (MIDHANI), HAL facilities and numerous private aerospace companies operating in and around Hyderabad.

Boost for Mahabubnagar District

If the project receives final approvals, it could become one of the largest industrial investments in Mahabubnagar district in recent years.

Local leaders have highlighted the strategic advantages of Devarakadra, including excellent highway connectivity, availability of large contiguous land parcels and proximity to Hyderabad’s industrial and aerospace ecosystem.

The project could also stimulate infrastructure development, housing demand, educational opportunities and business growth across the region.

Awaiting Final Approval

While land identification and preliminary discussions have reportedly progressed, the project is still awaiting final approvals and clearances before construction can begin.

Officials say Telangana has completed much of the groundwork required to facilitate the project and is actively positioning itself as a preferred destination for future defence manufacturing investments.

If approved, the BrahMos facility would mark a major milestone for Telangana’s industrial growth and significantly strengthen the state’s position in India’s rapidly expanding defence and aerospace sector.
