KT Rama Rao, the working president of BRS, will receive the Green Leadership Award 2025 in New York, USA, later this month. This award acknowledges his efforts in promoting sustainable governance and environmental changes in Telangana. The award ceremony will take place during the 9th NYC Green School Conference on September 24 in New York City. The organizers confirmed his selection in an official communication.
The letter from Green Mentors expressed their honor in choosing him for this prestigious award. As Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, KTR led significant environmental projects in India. One major initiative was planting 10 crore saplings, and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) developed 977 parks throughout the city.
The government also created 108 lung spaces and various theme parks, including rain gardens, landscape gardens, and vertical gardens. There were major efforts in institutional plantations, colony and street plantations, and median and avenue plantations, boosting Telangana’s green coverage.
Under this initiative, Hyderabad became a global model for environmental governance. The city received the World Green Cities Award and was the only Indian city recognized as a Tree City of the World by the Arbor Day Foundation and the FAO of the United Nations. During former CM K. Chandrashekar Rao’s leadership, Telangana’s green cover increased from 24% to 33% in both rural and urban areas. These accomplishments have made Telangana a leader in ecological conservation and a model for climate-resilient governance worldwide.
