Hyderabad: The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) has taken legal action against the lack of regulation on taxi fares in Telangana. They filed a petition with the state’s High Court, arguing that ride-hailing companies are setting fares independently, which negatively impacts both drivers and passengers.
The union is asking the state to establish standardized taxi fares under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. They want the government to ensure that all taxis have meters installed and verified, in accordance with the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.
Additionally, TGPWU is calling for a system to monitor and enforce these fare regulations. They also seek a public grievance redressal system for both drivers and passengers to resolve issues transparently. The case was presented before Justice K. Sarath at the Telangana High Court, which then issued a notice to the state government. Shaik Salauddin, the Founder President of TGPWU, emphasized the importance of this case for securing fair wages for drivers and preventing unfair pricing for passengers.
