Hyderabad: As the monsoon season begins, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) launched a free sanitation campaign on Monday. This initiative aims to collect discarded items and improve sanitation across Hyderabad to prevent flooding and disease outbreaks caused by debris accumulation.
The GHMC is using special vehicles to gather waste directly from homes and distribute it to those in need. In Banjara Hills, the Mayor started the program to stop waste disposal in drains, which often leads to blockages.
Residents are urged to keep their surroundings clean by disposing of household waste in designated clean vehicles. Improper waste disposal can lead to mosquito infestations and disease spread. Everyone is encouraged to contribute to keeping the area tidy. It’s important for residents to give their waste to clean autos instead of dumping it in open spaces, especially where bins are unavailable. The Mayor also highlighted that construction debris should not be left on streets. The GHMC’s C&D waste management plant will handle debris collection if contacted, preventing potential health risks.
The Mayor stressed the need for collective action to maintain the city’s cleanliness and announced regular fogging to reduce mosquito breeding.
Additional Commissioner Raghu Prasad stated that Banjara Hills will be cleaned within three to five days as part of the pre-sanitation effort. He assured that sanitation workers will easily manage their duties across colonies. A clean ward is planned for another division, expected to be ready in three days. Prasad highlighted that 150 wards in the broader area will receive similar cleaning attention.
Water Works GM Harishankar emphasized public worker safety during the season, advising against opening red-colored manholes in water-logged areas. He assured full support from the Jalmandali for all GHMC efforts.
Zonal Commissioner Anurag Jayanthi noted that early rains are anticipated this year, prompting actions like garbage management, construction debris removal, and fogging. With community support, a cleaner ward is achievable. Residents are encouraged to use designated clean autos for waste disposal, and measures will be taken to prevent water leaks.
