Hyderabad: On Saturday, Minister for Textiles Tummala Nageswara Rao met with officials from the Handloom and Textile Department. They discussed current projects and plans for National Handloom Day on August 7. The Minister asked the team to organize the event with enthusiasm, highlighting India’s rich handloom traditions.
He emphasized the timeless appeal of silk, cotton, and handloom items. The Minister was pleased that young people today are showing interest in these traditional crafts. Telangana’s handloom heritage is notable, featuring famous crafts like Gadwala, Narayanpet, Pochampally Ikkat, Siddipet Gollabhama, Armur Pithambari, Mahadevpur Tussar silk sarees, Warangal durries, Karimnagar bed sheets, and Alampur towels. These crafts are recognized both nationally and internationally.
Tummala urged the handloom societies to display these products at the upcoming textile exhibition for National Handloom Day. He highlighted the need for high-quality textiles that meet consumer demands to boost the sector’s growth.
Regarding welfare initiatives, the Minister pushed for faster selection of recipients for the Handloom Loan Waiver Scheme. He emphasized the importance of depositing funds on time. He also stressed the need to increase saree production for distribution to women through self-help groups under the Indira Kranti Mahila Shakti Scheme, ensuring quality and prompt delivery.
Tummala noted that various government departments are consistently issuing work orders to support weavers in creating empowering textile products.
He reinforced the necessity of fully implementing the Telangana Handloom Abhayahastam scheme, which provides benefits like savings and security for the welfare of weavers.
Principal Secretary Sailajaramaiyar and senior department officials attended the meeting. They committed to following the Minister’s directives to enhance the handloom sector in Telangana, focusing on growth and inclusivity.
