Hyderabad: Many believe that gated communities offer superior safety, featuring high walls, CCTV surveillance, and security guards. However, the tragic murder of Renu Agarwal has shown that luxury doesn’t always ensure security. This incident highlights a concerning pattern of crimes even in these supposedly secure areas, prompting questions about the safety of those outside these communities.

On September 10, 2025, Renu Agarwal, aged 50, was found murdered in her apartment at the Swan Lake gated community in Kukatpally, Hyderabad. Two domestic workers, hired through an agency in Kolkata, are suspected to have committed the crime.

Reports indicate that they tied Renu up, assaulted her with a pressure cooker, and fatally injured her using a knife and scissors. After the attack, they stole gold jewelry, approximately four tolas, and about Rs 1 lakh in cash.

The suspects allegedly took a shower, changed clothes in the apartment, and fled on a two-wheeler belonging to one of their employers. Renu’s husband and son discovered her body upon their return. Police have launched a manhunt, suspecting the culprits are heading towards Jharkhand. This event has raised alarms about the effectiveness of security in Hyderabad’s gated communities, emphasizing the need for better safety measures.

Security systems like alarms, cameras, and panic buttons often appear more for show than actual protection. Walls may be inadequate, alarms slow to respond, and panic buttons unreliable. While real estate companies promise peace of mind and exclusivity, this incident proves that true security requires more than just technological features. When crimes occur, gates and guards alone cannot guarantee safety. Both residents and authorities should demand genuine security measures instead of mere promises.
