Hyderabad: The National Alliance of People’s Movement (NAPM) has criticized the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, calling it unconstitutional. They are pressing for the law’s immediate removal and have asked the Supreme Court to declare it invalid.
The amendment alters the structure of Waqf Boards by requiring non-Muslim members to hold key roles. This change, made without prior discussion, is viewed as an attempt to marginalize the Muslim community. It also limits the ability to donate property as waqf to Muslims who have practiced Islam for at least five years, according to an NAPM statement.
The NAPM argues that this law is unfair and urges everyone who values justice to push for its repeal. They believe that public protest should convey to the authorities that divisive tactics won’t be accepted. The NAPM calls on the Supreme Court to recognize the act’s unconstitutionality, as it goes against minority protections and the equality guaranteed by Article 14. They hope the court will nullify the law.
