The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued a notification on Thursday to amend the Cable Television Network Rules from 1994. The amendment introduces a process for the renewal of Multi-System Operator (MSO) Registrations.

Additionally, the amendment includes a provision for cable operators to share infrastructure with broadband service providers. This is done to promote internet access in remote areas.

    – The application for renewal must be made within a window of seven to two months before the current registration expires.

This renewal procedure aims to provide certainty to cable operators and attract foreign investment by ensuring uninterrupted services and ease of doing business. The Ministry has provided a helpline number and email address for assistance with the renewal process.

Previously, only new MSO registrations were granted, and there was no specified validity period or requirement for online applications.

The provision for sharing infrastructure between cable operators and broadband service providers will promote internet access and efficient resource utilization. It will also reduce the need for additional broadband infrastructure.
