Hyderabad: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has reassured the government about medical college seats and permissions. They confirmed that there are no plans to reduce seats or revoke permissions.
State Health Secretary Christina Z Chongtu and Medical Education Director Narendra Kumar attended a meeting with NMC officials in Delhi. This meeting followed notices issued by the NMC regarding vacant positions and infrastructure issues in state medical colleges. The opposition, BRS, criticized the government, claiming that these issues could threaten college seats. This led to a heated exchange between ruling Congress and opposition BRS leaders. The Director of Medical Education (DME) clarified that issuing notices is routine and won’t affect seat numbers.
Officials reported that the NMC was satisfied with the information provided about faculty and infrastructure. They explained that opening many colleges simultaneously caused faculty shortages and infrastructure challenges.
The DME emphasized the government’s commitment to developing medical colleges and affiliated hospitals. They are actively constructing colleges and hospitals, with allocated funds and permissions for faculty hiring.
The NMC advised prompt faculty appointments and improvements in facilities. They stated there would be no issues with college permissions and no plans to reduce seats.
