Karimnagar is gearing up for the upcoming elections, but it seems like not many people will take advantage of the Central government’s free electricity scheme. In Telangana, there are two schemes available – BJP’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and the Congress party’s Free Electricity (up to 200 units per month).
The Central government’s scheme offers up to 300 units of free electricity each month, but it remains to be seen how many people will be interested. The Postal Department has started a survey to gauge public response to the scheme.
Some people in the state have already installed solar panels on their roofs as part of the scheme, but a lack of technicians to repair them has left the panels unused. If a solution to this problem is found, more people may participate in the scheme.
The Department of Posts has been tasked with creating public awareness about the Surya Ghar scheme. Meetings and exhibitions will be held in villages to educate people about the benefits. The department had started a house-to-house survey in Karimnagar district, but had to stop due to the election code.
The Surya Ghar scheme is available for those who consume more than 200 units of electricity. Homeowners and group homes are eligible to apply either through the postal department or online. Solar panels with one kilowatt capacity can generate 4 units of electricity per day, and beneficiaries will receive the subsidy amount within a month of installation.
