Hyderabad: Nobel Prize-winning economist Prof. Abhijit Banerjee is set to become an advisor to the TelanganaRising Vision Board, a new initiative launched by the Telangana state government.
Prof. Banerjee met with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy in Hyderabad on Saturday. They discussed several forward-thinking ideas to boost the state’s urban development, economic growth, and public revenue.
Banerjee, a 2019 Nobel Laureate in Economics and a Professor at MIT, accepted the Chief Minister’s request to join the advisory board. His role will focus on shaping policies that improve fiscal discipline, expand job opportunities, and strengthen skilling programs across Telangana.
During the meeting, Banerjee emphasized the importance of creating short-term courses that teach traditional skills in a modern format. He suggested tailoring these programs to current market needs and trends to make them more appealing and practical.
He also highlighted the power of social media in transforming traditional artisans into digital-age entrepreneurs. According to Banerjee, crafts and creativity should play a central role in the planning of Telangana’s Future City.
The economist praised CM Revanth Reddy’s inclusive policies, especially the recruitment of transgender individuals in police and municipal departments. He also commended the vision of developing the area within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) as a dedicated services zone.
Banerjee expressed strong support for the state’s plan to establish a skills and sports university, calling it a smart move toward long-term development.
With Banerjee’s expertise, the TelanganaRising Vision Board aims to bring bold and practical changes to the state’s economic and social landscape.
